At our Casa Quetzal Birding & Photography Guesthousewe have a few trails where you can discover birds and other wildlife on your own or you can participate in a guided walk.
Please be always very careful on trails and do not forget that you are in a tropical cloudforest and although there are beautiful birds, butterflies, mammals, plants, there are also some other members of the ecosystem which are not so much welcome by most of the people. These can be snakes, spiders, insects and some prickly or poisonous plants. However the chance to find any of these at this hight is much smaller than in the lowland tropical forest we still suggest to wear long trousers, shirts, boots or even wellingtons if it is rainy. It is always better to be on the safe side and this way you can concentrate more on the beauty of the paradise surrounds you!!! :-)
We have a few, short trails throughout our property, located at a hillside with panoramic views of the Savegre Valley, at the edge of the cloudforest.
Within a few miles drive there are several other lovely areas with good birding trails and some safe roadside spots where we can show you interesting species.
From all three ensuite rooms you can see and even photograph birds at different feeders and at flowery bushes, moss- and lichen-covered branches with bromeliads.
We also have a cozy, comfortable covered terrace with similar view, huge panoramic windows which can be slided for photography.
With a short trail you can be at a hidden corner of the garden with large, comfortable open-air, but covered hides looking at more feeders.
We use seasonal fruits, rice and sometimes seeds, plus many flowers and some hummingbird feeders to attract birds. The native bushes and flowers make sure that we have all the bird species around which are possible at this high elevation point.
Without making a full list here is a sample from the birds which are around regularly:
Flowers, bushes and hummingbird feeders attract Talamanca Hummingbird, Fiery-throated Hummingbird, Volcano Hummingbird, White-throated Mountain-gem and Lesser Violetear. Slaty Flowerpiercer, Sooty-capped Chlorosphingus, Large-footed Finch and Yellow-tighed Brushfinch are regularly around.
Much harder to see but it is around daily the strikingly coloured Golden-browed Chlorophonia and the skulking White-naped Brushfinch.
We also put out some hidden platforms with fruits, so you can enjoy some other birds as well that come regularly to the feeders like: Summer Tanager, Blue-Gray Tanager, Flame-colored Tanager, Baltimore Oriole, all three possible Thrushes such as Clay-colored, Mountain and Sooty, Acorn and sometimes Hairy Woodpecker, Rufous-collared Sparrow.
We do not see everyday in the garden Northern Emerald-Toucanet and Resplendant Quetzal but they are around as well. Same is true for Rufous-browed Peppershrike, Spotted Wood-quail, Black-billed Nightingale-Thrush, Black-faced Solitaire or Long-tailed Silky-Flycatcher.
If you scan the sky you can find beside some vultures a local breeding Red-tailed Hawk, Blue-and-white Swallows and White-collared Swifts. Sometimes we have a Bat Falcon, Sulphur-winged Parakeet, Ruddy Pigeon and Buff-fronted Quail-Dove around as well.
During dusk you can hear Dusky Nightjars and Costa Rican Pygmy-Owl, plus sometimes Coyotes are vary active as well.
At the moment we have a duplex large fix-built birdwatching and photography hide which is very comfortable, looking at flowery bushes and feeders.
ENJOY BIRDS, TREES, FLOWERS, PHOTOGRAPHY DURING YOUR STAY WITH US!:-)
